I am the wife of a korean and my journey to Korea started when I many years ago was interested in Kpop and anime. Fast forward 4-5 years I had graduated college and was finding it hard to get a job due to the economy at the time in America and a friend of a friend mentioned they had worked one year in Korea....so I started looking into it and I had decided to go to either Japan or Korea for a year and travel and work. I felt it could add to my resume and I loved travel so what did I have to lose?! Japan tends to like teachers with teaching experience, so I was getting job offers in Korea quicker and after considering several I accepted one.
Here are the things employers in Japan and Korea both want:
BA degree
Native speaker from the major English speaking countries(America, Canada, Australia, and alot of Europe).
Clean criminial background check
Proof your degree and background check are real(in the United States this is called an apostille)
They prefer some experience with children even if it is volunteer work
After getting all these documents together and apostilled the job and my visa in the first stage were approved and I was able to get started preparing for the actual move.
Things I recommmend
-Ask for pictures of the housing the school has for you
-Speak to previous employers
-Search up the school to make sure its not on a blacklist
-Join groups on facebook for expats and ask for the reputation of said schools
Most schools are good, but some are not and you can be stuck in a bad position..sometimes the best way to get a good position is join one of the facebook groups and have people get you connected to reputable jobs that pay taxes, pay well, good housing, insurance, pension, flights, and vacation time.
